Item description

Old oil painting on canvas excellent quality painting eighteenth century period religious subject St. Apollonia considered protector of teeth and dentists. St. Apollonia was a Christian martyr, revered by the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches as a saint. Historical notes: Between 248 and 249 in Alexandria of Egypt broke out a popular uprising against Christians, excited by a pagan fortune teller. Apollonia, an elderly unmarried Christian woman who had helped Christians and done apostolic work, was captured among others and was beaten to the point of dropping her teeth. According to popular tradition, her teeth were torn out with pincers. A great fire was then prepared to burn her alive if she had not uttered blasphemies. She managed to free herself from the hands of the plebs with cunning and threw herself into the flames, where she died, believing without doubt that suicide was not a fault in that situation, fearing that chastity would be violated by rape or that further torture before the stake would shake her faith. As we can see in our painting, the saint is represented with a pincer that holds a tooth and an ear of wheat. The painting in perfect condition is sold with an antique gold leaf frame.
