Pietro Chiesa

Born in Milan to a Swiss father and an Italian mother, Pietro Chiesa (1892-1948) is renowned as one of the most innovative figures in the panorama of Italian decorative arts in the first half of the 20th century. He was responsible for the diffusion of Made in Italy glass art in the world (in 1925 he exhibited in Paris at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes), thanks to his lamps, among his pieces, that seem to evoke works of abstract art. A forerunner of the times for the choice of pure and essential forms but always rich in character, which would later characterise industrial design, from 1933 to 1948 he was the artistic director of Fontana Arte, the company founded by Gio Ponti and Luigi Fontana and specialising in glass working and lighting.
